Our Story

Small Birds – Big Growth”

Mahakam village, located about 41 km from KALP’s head office, was selected in2024 for the PDS Project. Out of 12 families, Mrs. Satobai Patel was chosen as a beneficiary. She lives with her husband, Siyaram, in a modest mud-and-brick house. Together, they work as daily wage laborers. Siyaram also tends to villagers’ livestock in exchange for grain. Satobai has two married sons who live separately with their families, while she and her husband manage their household independently.

During farmer meetings, Satobai showed keen interest in poultry rearing. From the second round of toolkits, she began separating large birds from smaller ones, ensuring better management. As the birds matured, she started selling them, attracting buyers from nearby Sonakhan village (2 km away). Her timing was strategic—she aligned toolkit collection with bird sales, maximizing efficiency.

Economic Growth

  • With guidance from field staff, Satobai began saving her earnings from poultry. In the last year, she received 9 toolkits (90 birds). Out of these, she sold 75 birds, earning ₹23,700. She wisely invested ₹9,000 in purchasing three goats (two female, one male), recognizing that goats require low investment but yield quick profits. The remaining income was used for her grandchildren’s education, medicines, and household needs.
  • Satobai’s story reflects how small interventions can lead to sustainable growth. She proudly shares:

“I am very much thankful to KALP and Shivia who has given me the opportunity of a stable income source. This source has not only brought happiness but also given us confidence in economic growth. I purchased goats to add more income. Thank you, KALP.”
